July 2013 Round-up!

Been missing out on the goings on from our social media pages online? Never worry, from now on we’ll be doing a monthly round-up of all the important news connected with Donegal County Council.

July kicked off with a welcomed heat-wave which brought the beach bunnies out in their droves! It also kicked off a new term for the New Mayor of Donegal Ian McGarvey when the Donegal Youth Council paid a visit to the Council Chambers for their meeting.

  • The National Adjudication of 2013 IPB Pride of Place Competition for County Donegal took place during the month of July. Five very worthy initiatives in various categories were adjudicated. Pride of Place, which is run by Donegal County Council in the context of the broader Co-operation Ireland project has been in operation since 2003 and going from strength to strength since then. Its objective is to give deserved recognition and to celebrate the vital contributions that community partnerships make to society.
  • Eunan O’Donnell took to OceanFM to talk all things Cycle Route. Listen to his piece here .
  • We began circulating information around possible hazards septic tanks for the public to raise awareness of the dangers of such occurrences.
  • Donegal County Council Library Service, Libraries NI and The Irish Cultural Centre of New England in Boston began working together on a One Book One Community Project.  This celebration of Colmcille will run until  August 22nd, 2013.1044762_10153082260060160_105111062_n


    • Planes, Trains and Jigs & Reels – Unique Heritage Festival brings Bundoran’s history back to life came about on the 15th.

    • A day in the life of a ‪#‎Donegal‬ Beach Lifeguard!
      Go Visit Donegal met Malachy Kelly (30) and Stephen McCabe (24), the beach lifeguards on duty at the time and got an insight into the typical day on ‪#‎Culdaff‬ ‪#‎Beach‬.  To read all a…bout their trip out of the office and onto one of our ‪#‎blueflagbeaches‬ as well as what it’s like being a lifeguard on our beautiful beaches see their blog!
  • We urged the public to keep our #beautiful #beaches fantastic places for everyone to enjoy. The good weather saw large numbers of people flocking to our coastline to enjoy our many wonderful beaches over the last couple of weeks.  Donegal County Council appeals to the public to act responsibly when visiting Donegal’s beaches during this spell of good weather


  • The new Edition of the Donegal Community In Touch Ezine was published, the July issue of which can be viewed on our site here!

  • Did you know – There are 6000kms of Non-National Roads in Donegal alone? That’s from here to New York! And that 37million Euro was spent last year on Road Maintenance and the same is estimated to be spent this year?


  • Mayor of Donegal welcomes announcement that Donegal Town will be a Regional Office for Irish Water!
  • We announced that Donegal County Council  would once again be webcasting proceedings from the MacGill Summer School live via the Councils website.  This is the fourth year that the Council has webcasted this event live from Glenties and is proving to be very popular especially with the Donegal and Irish diaspora.
  • A weather warning of Code Orange was issued for Ireland, ending the almost month-long heatwave and the last remaining evidence of the sun from Donegal! …But we hear it’s due back in August, so, fingers crossed.
  • A reminder to Register of Electors for Upcoming Referendum Mr. Phil Hogan, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, made an order appointing Friday 4 October 2013.


  • Launch of the Annual Tip O’Neill Irish Diaspora Award 2013 to take place in Buncrana. The recipient of which was Brian Schweitzer. Governor Brian Schweitzer was elected governor of Montana in 2004 and re-elected in 2008. Schweitzer first entered politics in 1993, when President Bill Clinton appointed him to the U.S. Agriculture Department Farm Service Agency Committee. He served at the USDA for seven years. Schweitzer was chosen as a keynote speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. He has chaired both the Democratic Governors Association and the West Governors Association. Governor Brian Schweitzer has strong Irish connections. Hannah Friel, Brian’s mother, was born in 1899 and left Rathmullan for America with her sister Mary Ann, while in her early twenties. Schweitzer has maintained close contact with Donegal and has a keen interest in the county and its people.

  • Bundoran Heritage Festival timetable was released.
  • Crossborder Delegation on the  #A5 Western Transport Corridor Project. Present where Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD and Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar TD meeting with the cross border, cross-party delegation in Leinster House.   • Mayo and Donegal football managers kick-started a campaign to encourage motorists to watch their speed and be aware of driver fatigue. The campaign named You Snooze You Lose asks motorists and passengers to make a personal commitment to drive at appropriate and legal speeds in a bid to tackle concerns about speeding in local communities and a special appeal will be made at the big match on Sunday for all the fans to drive with care. June 2013 round-up!

Missed anything put forward from @DonegalCouncil on either our Facebook page or our Twitter? Then here you’ll find our news round-up for June.

  • June began with the long-awaited Donegal Diaspora Conference being held in Letterkenny IT, and was attended by speakers connected with Donegal and its Diaspora from all over the world.


  • News came then on the 5th of June that Bundoran had retained its Blue Flag Beach status for their 26th consecutive year! All in all there were 13 Blue Flags awarded to Bundoran, Rossnowlagh, Murvagh, Fintra, Narin (Portnoo), Carrickfinn, Killahoey (Dunfanaghy), Marblehill, Portsalon (Magherawarden), Lisfannon, Shroove, Culdaff and Downings. This was a boost for the county and further proof that Donegal really does have the best beaches! With these awards came the start of what looked like a proper summer too!


  • Former Manchester United player, Pat (Paddy) Crerand was honoured with a Civic Reception in the County House Lifford. Paddy was given this honour in recognition of his sporting achievements over the years with teams like Celtic and Manchester United, as well as his long career in radio and television broadcasting.


  • June 11th saw a number of changes at Donegal County Council, or rather a number change – to reach us now dial  074 91 53900 and Fax number to 074 91 72812
  • Letterkenny Bike Week, Active Letterkenny, Bike Route Launched with Minister for State Alan Kelly there to launch the 200km Cycle Route in Donegal. The route starts from Donegal Town and runs through towns and villages towards Burtonport, Milford on to Letterkenny and finishes in Newtowncunningham.   • Donegal County Council appointed Bryson Recycling to manage and operate the Council owned Recycling Centres following a public procurement process.


  •  Patsy McGonagle was awarded the highest honour of the county at a Civic Reception and Freedom of The County ceremony in Lifford on June 14th. Patsy was honoured for his vast contribution to sports and athletics in Donegal, Ireland and worldwide.


  • Donegal joined the Eurovelo route – Route1 Atlantic Coast Route linking us with Norway, the UK, Spain and Portugal. Providing another great boost for Donegal tourism and biking! EuroVelo is a project of the European Cyclists’ Federation to develop a cycle route network consisting of 13 long-distance routes crossing Europe. The total length will exceed 70,000 km (43,496 mi).


  • Today FM’s The KC Show began it’s 5day broadcast from sunny Bundoran from the 21st, providing a boost to the area with some fantastic activities / businesses showcased on their show daily during their visit!
  • Earagail Arts Festival kicked off on the Inishowen Peninsula on the opening weekend. Running a series of events from June 21st to until July 21st.


  • Donegal County Council Library Service was proud to announce their annual Summer Reading Programme for children & young people at your local library and selected Taobh Tíre centres.
    The Library Service’s Summer Reading Programme is all about focusing on the enjoyment of reading and helping families support their children’s literacy development in a well-resourced and pleasant environment.


  • The kids from St Mary’s Primary School in Ballybofey called into the County House as part of their school tour, learning all about the goings on inside Donegal County Council and what that means for them.

  • Cllr. Ian McGarvey was named the new Mayor of Donegal on the 24th of June!
